Lady Wildcats defeat Lady Warriors 8-1
The Taft High varsity girls' tennis team won its season opener, 8-1, over Tehachapi in a match that was closer than the score indicates.
"We won all four tiebreakers," Coach Jim Carnal said. "If we lost those, we could have lost, 5-4. Fortunately, we practice a lot of tiebreakers and the girls played with a lot of heart and refused to give up even though it was hot and some played four, even five, sets. It was a quality win because Tehachapi is always strong in tennis and finished in the final four in Division II last season."
Taft managed to sweep the singles round in six hard-fought matches. Number 1 Taylan Erro beat Ashley Rush, 6-3, 6-3. That was a good win because two days earlier, Rush had beaten McKenzie Berkshire, the No. 1 player for Bakersfield Christian, 6-2, 6-4.
