  • The Taft High varsity girls' tennis team won its season opener, 8-1, over Tehachapi in a match that was closer than the score indicates.
"We won all four tiebreakers," Coach Jim Carnal said. "If we lost those, we could have lost, 5-4. Fortunately, we practice a lot of tiebreakers and the girls played with a lot of heart and refused to give up even though it was hot and some played four, even five, sets. It was a quality win because Tehachapi is always strong in tennis and finished in the final four in Division II last season."
Taft managed to sweep the singles round in six hard-fought matches. Number 1 Taylan Erro beat Ashley Rush, 6-3, 6-3. That was a good win because two days earlier, Rush had beaten McKenzie Berkshire, the No. 1 player for Bakersfield Christian, 6-2, 6-4. Lupita Lozano battled back to beat Carrie Brewer, 1-6, 6-1, 10-7.
Roxi Barboza beat Laney Ricker, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Haven Cook beat sophomore Taylor Cummings, 6-3, 7-5. Junior Jen Rivera beat senior Hannah Silitonga, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. And, junior Gloria Okafor outlasted senior Audrey Moon, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
Taft swept the top two doubles with Erro and Lozano beating Rush and Ricker, 6-2, 6-2, and Barboza and Cook getting by Brewer and Cummings, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8). Tehachapi got its sole win at No. 3 doubles with Madison Johnson and Isabel Tinajero, beating Karina Amaya and Griselda Ramos, 6-4, 6-3.
Taft is 1-0; Tehachapi dropped to 0-2.
