Nerves have a way of playing a role, especially at the start of the season. The Taft freshmen volleyball team got a taste of it first hand Tuesday afternoon in a 25-17, 25-19 loss to Golden Valley in Bakersfield.
It looked as if the Lady Wildcats would have a strong first set after jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Golden Valley roared back to take a 8-5 advantage before Taft cut it to one. The Lady Bulldogs took off again with a 9-3 run to up their lead to 18-10. Taft snapped the streak with a point but Golden Valley answered with a 5-2 run. The Lady Wildcats narrowed the deficit to six before Golden Valley wrapped up the first set.
Taft nearly duplicated their first set run in the second set with a 3-1 run highlighted by Courtney Reed's ace. Golden Valley stormed back with a 14-1 run to lead 15-4. Taft fought back to get within five before the Lady Bulldogs took off to lead by eight. Taft got within two but Golden Valley went on a 7-3 run to close out the match.
The Lady Wildcats return to action Saturday in the Garces Tournament.
