  •  The Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team won its league opener, 9-0, over Cesar Chavez Tuesday.
“We swept singles in straight sets, so we sat out our top three players in doubles to make those matches more competitive and they were,” Coach Jim Carnal said.
Number 1 Taylan Erro beat Alyssa Resalvo, 6-3, 6-1. Lupita Lozano beat Claire Tomvoc, 6-0, 6-4. Roxi Barboza got past lefty Diana Calivoso, 6-4, 6-1. Haven Cook was the first player off the court with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win over Delilah Castro. Jen Rivera beat Mary Munoz, 6-0, 6-1. And, Gloria Okafor overpowered Janet Angel, 6-1, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, No. 5 Rivera and No. 6 Okafor, both juniors, beat No. 1 Resalvo and No. 2 Tomvoc, 6-4, 6-4. Cook and Katrina Amaya beat Munoz and Angel, 7-5, 6-0. Cesar Chavez had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles because they could not field an eighth player. But in an exhibition match, Griselda Ramos and Liliana Noriega beat No. 4 Castro and No. 7 Gisella Avila in the closest match of the day, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6).
“I was really proud of the girls for winning the close matches. After two matches, the girls are 6-0 in tiebreakers,” Carnal said.
Taft’s varsity improved to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the South Sequoia League. Cesar Chavez dropped to 0-2, 0-1 in the SSL.
The JV contest at home was even more one-sided with Taft winning, 9-0. Paige Gaylord shut out Jeanette Arellano, 6-0, 6-0. Destany Rocha beat Cassie Caboding, 6-0, 6-1. Ruby Stith beat Griselda Avila, 6-2, 6-1. Willow Owen bageled Violeta Trujillo, 6-0, 6-0. Cooper Mainard was beating Raij Batth, 4-0, when Batth was injured and withdrew. Tory Parkinson blanked Aleeza Malasig, 6-0, 6-0.
In pro set doubles, Gaylord and Cassandra Toro beat Arellano and Caboding, 8-2. Luzelena Cisneros and Brenda Osornia beat Avila and Trujillo, 8-1. And, Kira Swope and Kimberly Quinonez won by forfeit because Cesar Chavez only brought six players instead of the mandatory eight.
Taft’s JV has not dropped a set and improved to 2-0 overall; 1-0 in the SSL.
The varsity team travels to Wasco on Thursday and then faces Bakersfield Christian at home on Tuesday, Sept. 3, in a showdown of the league’s top two teams.
