Sally Ann Nolan, 78, was found deceased on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in the Klamath River area after being reported missing for five days. We are so grateful to all the search and rescue personnel during this extremely difficult time but thankful to have her back home.
Sally was born on Jan. 11, 1935, in Wilmar to Harold and Edna May Vaughn. She attended Alhambra High School and Whittier College in Los Angeles. She met and married her college sweetheart, Mick Grensted, in 1955. Mick and Sally had two children, Jim and Julie, in 1956 and 1957. After Mick graduated from Whittier, he accepted a teaching and basketball coaching position in Yreka in 1960.
Sally was a substitute teacher primarily at Gold Street School. For 10 years, she was the teacher's aide for Judi Washington's first grade class. She was active with charity work, including the Gray Ladies of Siskiyou General Hospital, Pink Ladies, Candy Stripers and Children's Home Society. She was also active with her children's education and sports and was also a fixture in the basketball gymnasium. She was a huge sports fan and always kept up with the teams. She was such an animal lover and never met a dog or a cat she didn't like.
Sally married Robert Nolan in 1974. She and Bob owned and operated Nolan Litho and Printing for 25 years. They lived a happy, quiet life until Bob's passing in 2004.
She was lovingly cared for by many close friends in Yreka. Given the chance to move away, she always said this was her home. She will always be remembered for her generous heart and sweet demeanor. Being an only child, she cherished her family and grandchildren. We are truly devastated by her passing but hope to honor her with our lives and hearts. She was so very proud of her granddaughters and was a loving mother to Julie and Jim.
Sally is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Tim Gaines of Foster City and her grand-daughters, Katie of Greenville, S.C. and Cari of Boston, Mass.
Preceding her in death was her beloved son, Jim.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Girdner Funeral Chapel followed by a noon luncheon at the Yreka Elks Lodge.
