Motorcycle and big rig collide at Highway 33 and Wood Street.

One man was killed and a boy critically injured Monday morning in Taft when a motorcycle and big rig collided at Highway 33 and Wood Street.

The driver of the motorcycle, and older man, was pronounced dead at the scene, Taft Chief of Police Ed Whiting said.

The passenger, a young boy who appeared to be 10 to 12 years old, was airlifted to Kern Medical Center in critical condition, Whiting said.

Their names will be released by the Kern County Coroner's Office after families have been notified.

Whiting said to it is to early to say exactly what happened.

"The investigation is underway and there has been no determination as to cause," Whiting said.

"As far was we know, no alcohol or drugs played into this at this time."

He said the motorcycle was southbound on Highway 33 and the truck, a tractor pulling a flatbed, was northbound.

It was the second fatal accident on area highways over the 3-day Labor day weekend. On Saturday, two people were killed and three injured in a head-on collision on Highway 119.
