Bakersfield Christian defeats Lady Wildcats 6-3

The Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team lost the battle for the league lead to perennial powerhouse Bakersfield Christian, 6-3, on Tuesday.

Taft’s JV team beat BCHS there, 9-0.

“The varsity match was close and went down to the final two doubles matches,” Taft coach Jim Carnal said.

“The bright spot for us was that our top player, Taylan Erro, won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles which makes her the top player in the South Sequoia League. That is a first for Taft tennis but the season is just starting.”

Erro beat freshman wunderkind McKenzie Berkshire, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The Eagles won the next four matches. Breanna Morris beat Lupita Lozano, 6-1, 7-5.

Abby Williams beat Roxi Barboza, 6-1, 6-2. Taylor Touchstone beat Haven Cook , 6-1, 6-1. Kristen Kaing beat Jen Rivera, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 6 singles, Taft’s Gloria Okafor finished strong to beat Brittany Aguilar, 4-6, 6-2, 10-2.

Taft had to sweep the three doubles matches to win. Erro and Cook did their part with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Berkshire and Williams. Taft lost a heartbreaker at No. 2 doubles.

Three balls the other way and the Wildcats would have won the match but Lozano and Barboza fell to Morris and Touchstone in a pair of tiebreaker sets, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-8). Taft’s No. 3 doubles team of Karina Amaya and Griselda Ramos lost to the more seasoned team of Anika Tanus and Monique Oja, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Taft dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the South Sequoia League. Bakersfield Christian improved to 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the SSL.
Taft swept the JV match.

Paige Gaylord held on to beat Marguax Hein, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. The other matches were more one sided. Destany Rocha beat Angie Gruggett, 6-1, 6-4.

Ruby Stith beat Tessa Touchstone, 6-2, 6-0. Cassandra Toro shut out Hannah Lewis, 6-0, 6-0. Willow Owen bageled Natalie Bloemhof, 6-0, 6-0. Cooper Mainard beat Kaylee Curless, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, Gaylord and Kyrsten Davis beat Curless and Sofia Oelosantos, 6-3, 6-1. Stith and Toro blanked Tessa Touchstone and Daphne Rynters, 6-0, 6-0. Tory Parkinson and Luzelena Cisneros beat Alesha Jex and Daisy Gutierrez, 6-0, 6-2.

Taft’s JV improved to 3-1 overall; 2-1 in the SSL.
