  • A Kern County firefighter was injured Wednesday while battling a house fire in Taft.
The firefighter, whose name was not released, fell from a ladder and was taken by Hall Ambulance to Mercy Southwest Hospital for treatment of a neck injury, Battalion Chief Brent Moon said.
He was later released from the hospital and will be off duty for about a week, Moon said. The injured firefighter was from Station 21 here in Taft.
The injured firefighter was one of about a dozen that responded to the fire at 708 Second Street at 11:22 a.m.
Moon said arriving firefighters found the 1200-square foot home with heavy fire and smoke coming from the front.
The fire had already vented, Moon said. Initial reports indicated an invalid may have been inside, but those reports were false.
The fire burned power lines to a neighboring house, creating a hazard for firefighters.
Moon said the house had been vacant for more than a year, but trespassers had been seen in and out of the house.
The cause is still under investigation and an arson investigator was called to the fire.
