  • There’s something unusual about the South Sequoia League after just two weeks of the non-league grind.  Arvin and Shafter are the only undefeated teams.
Wasco’s not the leader of the pack, for now, because the Tigers took their high octane running game to Griffith Field.  For the handful of you who don’t know, Griffith Field is sacred ground.  It’s the house of the venerable Bakersfield High Drillers.  BHS is Division I.  Wasco is Division IV.  Something had to give.  It was Wasco.
Although they lost 35-13, the Tigers left Griffith with some well-deserved respect from the Blue and White.
Wasco’s junior workhorse Isaiah Sharp had a good night with 119 yards on 19 carries, and the Tigers had a respectable 270 yards in total offense.
Arvin beat Foothill 23-13 and Shafter blitzed Granite Hills 52-0 as both improved to 2-0.
Taft was the only other SSL team to win last week, so the Wildcats join Wasco, Kennedy and Chavez with 1-1 records.
Bakersfield Christian has started the season 0-2 after losing to Central Valley Christian in Visalia.
Only six of the 21 Division IV teams are spotless after the first two weeks of the season.
Arvin, Kerman and Exeter are 2-0 while Mission Oak, Central Valley Christian and Fowler are 1-0.
Taft is among six teams at 1-1 and nine D-IV teams are still looking for their first win.
Tonight’s Taft-Exeter game could be interesting.  Both teams pound the ball on offense and both have stellar defensive units.
Exeter’s workhorse is junior Austin Cardoza who has 378 yards on 62 carries in his first two games.  The ’Cats counter with a 1-2 punch: Eddie Romo and Joseph Sanchez, who have combined for 379 yards.  Expect to see the Monarchs test the Wildcat secondary.  Quarterback Javier Brito is 20-for-39 for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
Prep Note: After scoring 80 points in their season opener, Porterville High fell 20 points off the pace last week with a 60-24 win over West, so the Panthers are averaging just 70 points a game.
