The Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team beat Arvin, 9-0, Tuesday.
“We swept singles in straight sets, so we sat out our top four players in doubles to make those matches more competitive and they were,” Coach Jim Carnal said.
In singles, No. 1 Taylan Erro beat Jazmin Zuniga, 6-2, 6-0. Lupita Lozano beat Alondra Lule, 6-2, 6-0. Roxi Barboza beat Alicia Clemente, 6-1, 6-1. Haven Cook was the first player off the court with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Iyacsiri Barrera. Jen Rivera fell behind Alondra Soto, 2-1, but then ran the next 11 games to win, 6-2, 6-0. And, Gloria Okafor bageled Vitali Cruz, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, No. 5 Rivera and No. 6 Okafor, both juniors, beat No. No. 2 Lule and No. 3 Clemente, both seniors, 6-4, 6-3. No. 7 Karina Amaya and No. 8 Griselda Ramos came from behind to beat No. 1 Zuniga and No. 4 Barrera, in the closest match, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-4. And No. 9 Liliana Noriega and No. 10 Guadalupe Salomon beat No. 7 Marilu Perez and No. 8 Elena Garcia, 6-1, 6-2.
Taft’s varsity improved to 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the South Sequoia League.
The JV match in Arvin was a bit closer with Taft winning, 7-2.
At No. 1 singles Taft’s Paige Gaylord ended up losing by two points to Alyssa Hilts. Gaylord lost the first set, 6-3, won the second set, 7-6 (7-1) but lost the deciding third-set tiebreaker, 10-8.
Taft swept the other singles matches. Kyrsten Davis held on to beat Michelle Cruz, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Ruby Stith came from behind to beat Angelica Fuentes, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8. Willow Owen beat Yesenia Ordaz, 7-5, 6-3. Cooper Mainard beat Daisy Silva, 6-3, 6-4. Tory Parkinson beat Erica Murillo, 6-0, 6-3.
In pro-set doubles, Gaylord and Davis lost a close one to Hilts and Cruz, 8-7 (10-7). Mainard and Owen beat Fuentes and Ordaz, 8-2. And Luzelena Cisneros and Kira Swope beat Natelie Velasco and Elliana Lopez, 8-3.
The varsity team travels to Shafter on Tuesday and then hosts Wasco at home on Thursday. The home and away schedule is the opposite for JV.
