Tuesday was Carolina Celiz's lucky day. The Taft Union High School sophomore was the winner of a Kindle Fire tablet valued at $200 and donated by an anonymous donor.
The middle-aged male donor spent $200 at the Taft High Parent Support Association fireworks booth in July. That purchase netted him four raffle tickets which he donated to the school with the proviso that if the tickets were winners, to give the proceeds to a deserving student. He asked to remain anonymous. One of the tickets won the Kindle. With 975 students at the school, Superintendent Blanca Cavazos put 975 numbers in a random online number-picking system and the result was number 150. In alphabetical order, the 150th student was Celiz.
Celiz, who "reads a lot," especially Percy Jackson books, was "really surprised" and found it "really nice" that someone would donate such a nice gift anonymously.
