  • A Taft man was sentenced to 7 years in prison for the drunk driving crash that killed his brother.
Leobardo Lopez-Martinez was the driver of a car that slammed into a tree on Highway 119 on March 23, killing Alejandro-Martin Lopez, 25.
Lopez was the brother of the driver, Taft Police said.
Lopez-Martinez pleaded guilty to one felony count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Taft Police said the Lopez was driving northbound on Highway 119 just south of Kern Street when he lost control of the car, it slid across the roadway and crashed broadside into a tree on the west side of the highway near East San Emidio Street.
Lopez-Martinez and another passenger escaped with minor injuries, but Lopez died early the next day at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.
Kern County Superior Court records show Lopez-Martinez was arrested for DUI in 2010 but never went to court.
