Both teams improve to 8-1 in league play

The Taft High varsity girls’ tennis team dominated the Shafter Generals in a 9-0 league win Tuesday<Sept. 24>. In games, Taft won 108-12.
Likewise, Taft’s JV won 9-0 here.

In the varsity match, No. 1 Taylan Erro blanked Blanca Zamora, 6-0, 6-0, and was the first one off the court. In the closest match of the day, Lupita Lozano beat Paulett Zavala, 6-2, 6-4. Roxi Barboza blanked Melyssa Osornio, 6-0, 6-0. Jen Rivera beat Giselle Lopez, 6-0, 6-1. Gloria Okafor beat Allysa Soto, 6-0, 6-1. And, Karina Amaya shut out Christina Esparza, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Barboza and Rivera beat Zavala and Osornio, 6-2, 6-2. Lozano and Griselda Ramos shut out Soto and Karen Gutierrez, 6-0, 6-0. Erro and Guadalupe Salomon bageled Karen Ramos and McKenzie Dowdle, 6-0, 6-0.

Taft’s varsity improved to 12-3 overall; 8-1 in the SSL.

Shafter dropped to 1-9; 1-8 in the SSL.

In the JV match coach Doug Taylor played 12 players (the most possible), Liliana Noriega beat Jasmine Lomeli, 6-2, 6-0. Paige Gaylord beat Ashly Marrquez, 6-1, 6-3. Destany Rocha beat Rebecca Bernal, 6-0, 6-3. Kyrsten Davis shut out Alyssa Moreno, 6-0, 6-0. Willow Owen beat Andrea Espinoza, 6-1, 6-4. And, Ruby Stith bageled Jasmine Villanueva, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Cooper Mainard and Tory Parkinson beat Lomeli and Brianna Contreras, 6-0, 6-1. In the closest match of the day, Luzelena Cisneros and Cassandra Toro outlasted No. 2 Marrquez and No. 3 Bernal, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 10-5. Brenda Osornia and Yarely Quevado beat Moreno and Espinoza, 6-2, 6-3.

Taft’s JV improved to 14-4 overall; 8-1 in the SSL.

Next week, Taft’s varsity, 8-1, will try and avenge its only league loss when it travels to undefeated Bakersfield Christian at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Taft’s JV hosts BCHS here. On Thursday, Taft’s varsity visits Robert F. Kennedy. RFK does not have a JV team.
