It might have been their home turf but the Lincoln seventh grade girls volleyball team found themselves in a battle late Wednesday afternoon. When the dust had settled it was the Lady Lions that had come out on top after they had outlasted the Lady Badgers 25-23, 25-17 in Taft.
Lincoln had the momentum early by jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first set thanks in part to an ace from Ally Houghton. The only times El Tejon got a point during that period of time was to tie the score at one and then break a 4-0 run by Lincoln.
El Tejon was able to cut the deficit in half at 7-3 and again at 8-4, but the Lady Lions countered with a 2-0 run to lead by six.
At that point, the Lady Badgers roared back by cutting the lead down to one. El Tejon stayed within short striking distance until they tied the score at 12.
Lincoln attempted to pull away with a 3-0 run highlighted by a pair of aces from Houghton. However, the Lady Badgers knotted the score at 15, 16 and again at 17. With the help of back-to-back aces from Jadynn Rosenberger, Lincoln took off again with a 3-0 run to lead 20-17.
El Tejon fought back with a 4-2 run to take their first lead of the set at 22-21. Lincoln roared back with a 4-1 run to win the set.
Lincoln extended their run into the second set when they outscored El Tejon 5-2 on an ace from Kaitlyn Simmermaker and one from Alana Iotamo.
El Tejon cut the deficit to two, but Lincoln was able to hang on to a small lead until they went on a 6-1 run highlighted by Houghton ace. El Tejon fought back to trail by three at 18-15, but the Lady Lions went on a7-2 run to close out the set and match.
