Born to John and Helen Troka in 1923 on June 17th, Dorothea lived in Chicago with two brothers, Albin and James. Dorothea (Dody) attended Josephinum High School and lived near Division and Grand. The family legacy included classic cars and motor boats on Lake Michigan. Her father bought and sold 75 Deusenbergs, along with other classics including Auburns, Cords, Rolls Royces, and the famous Mormon Meteor speedcar. The family enjoyed boat outings in the "Helen K" on Lake Michigan. Dorothea married Charles "Mac" McCarren, of Chicago, in 1949. After a honeymoon to Southern California the couple relocated there where Charles' brother William McCarren and sister May McCarren Setlock lived. They lived in Orange County and, after raising three children there, Dorothea worked at Cal State Fullerton and Cerritos College. The family attended Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. In 1979, Dorothea and Charles transitioned to Taft, CA where he died in 1983. Dorothea continued to live in Taft, and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church, even serving as President of the Y.L.I. Organization. Dorothea had a dynamic will to live, and enjoyed active days through her 90th birthday! She is described as sweet, kind, and a grand lady. Dorothea was suddenly on Hospice care at home only five days, and took her last breath on Friday night, September 27, 2013. Dorothea is survived by her children, Colleen Smith of Ventura, Charles McCarren and daughter-in-law, Laura of Atascadero, and John McCarren of Taft; and by her grandchildren, Jessica Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Jennifer Smith-Arnold, and Melanie Bangle, along with numerous Troka and McCarren families. There will be an intimate graveside service for family and friends on Friday, October 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m at the West Side District Cemetery. There are no visitation hours scheduled and the arrangements are under the direction of the Erickson & Brown Funeral Home. To sign an online registry please visit www.EricksonAndBrown.com
