In a split second the hopes and dreams of the Taft varsity football team remaining perfect in league play came to a crashing end Friday night when the Shafter Generals came back to defeat the Wildcats 21-17 in Shafter.
Shafter had all of the momentum from the start when they scored a touchdown on a six-yard run in the first quarter. The Generals added onto their score early in the second quarter with a 14-yard touchdown pass. Taft had several chances to score a touchdown in the second quarter but the only points they scored during that period of time came on a field goal with 4:06 to go.
Momentum switched sides in the second half with the Wildcat defense stepping up and Taft scoring on a punt return to get within four. The Wildcats took the lead in the fourth quarter with 6:50 to go. They had a chance to put the game away later in the quarter but Shafter recovered a fumble with 1:17 to go.
Shafter responded with a series of passes including one for a touchdown with 24 seconds left.
