The Lady Bears win in five sets
What started off as a successful evening for the Taft varsity volleyball team quickly turned into a nightmare after Arvin came back to defeat the Lady Wildcats 21-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-8 in Arvin Thursday evening.
Arvin had the momentum early by jumping out to a 7-3 lead in the first set. Taft battled back to tie the score at 11 before the teams tied each other five different times. Taft broke the final tie with a 6-2 run to take the opening set.
Taft turned the tables by reeling off four straight points to open the second set. However, the Lady Bears fought back to tie the score at five and again at six. The Lady Wildcats countered with a 10-3 run to lead 16-9. Arvin narrowed the deficit to six but Taft outscored the Lady Bears 9-6 to win the second set.
That is when momentum switched for good after Arvin jumped out to a 6-0 advantage to open the second set. Taft cut the lead to four but that was as close as Taft got in the third set.
The fourth set was closer with the teams tying each other 10 times. In that span of time the lead was not bigger than five. Arvin though outscored Taft 4-1 to send the match to a fifth set.
Arvin regained the momentum in the fifth set with a 9-2 run to begin the set. Taft narrowed it to five but Arvin answered with a 6-4 run to win the set and match.
