  • Taft College hopes to keep pace with the leaders of the Central Valley Conference Wednesday when the Cougars host College of the Sequoias in a 6 p.m. volleyball match in the Al Baldock Cougar Sports Center.
    The Cougars are coming off a sweep over Reedley College last Friday to remain in a tie for second place with Porterville – both teams at 4-1 in the CVC and chasing perennial champion Fresno (5-0). TC travels to Fresno on Friday.
    Sequoias is in fourth place in the conference with a 3-2 record.  The Giants are 4-9 overall.
    The scores in the Reedley sweep were 25-18, 25-21 and 25-17.
    Chelsea Wong, a freshman outside hitter, led the Cougars both offensively and defensively with 16 kills and 14 digs.  She also had a block.
    Sophomore Tiffany Mapusaga, who is among the conference leaders in several statistical categories, delivered 10 kills and had 6 digs.
    Freshman Risha Alaiasa had 8 kills and 8 digs and came up with a block.
    Maeleen Hopeau had five kills and delivered three blocks to lead the Cougars in that category.
    Setter Kaylynn Palama had 35 assists, five digs and a block.
    Taft High product Tara Kelley had 9 digs and libero Lani Kaiwi had 7 digs.
    The win gives the Cougars a 4-1 record in the CVC and 11-4 overall.
    TC is ranked 13th in northern California.  Fresno is ranked third and seventh in the state.  Porterville, which swept Taft on Oct. 4, is ranked eighth in NorCal and 23rd in California.
