The Taft varsity volleyball team enjoyed their second to last home match Tuesday evening with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-12 victory over the Robert F. Kennedy Thunderbirds.
It didn't take long for the Lady Wildcats to get on a roll after outscoring Robert F. Kennedy 7-1 to begin the first set. The Thunderbirds roared back to get within one thanks to five unanswered points. Taft held onto the narrow advantage until they went on a 6-1 run to up the lead to 18-9.
Robert F. Kennedy briefly bounced back to cut the deficit to eight at 18-10 and 19-11 but Taft answered with a 6-3 run to take the first set.
Taft had a tougher time in the second set. After the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 5-2 lead, the Lady Thunderbirds countered with a point to trail by two. Taft maintained the small lead before Robert F. Kennedy went on a 5-2 run to overtake the lead at 17-14. Taft roared back with a 9-2 run to take the lead back at 23-19.
Robert F. Kennedy scored the next two points before Taft answered with two to win the set.
Taft regained their momentum at the start of the third set by racing out to a 6-0 lead. After the Lady Thunderbirds cut the lead in half, Taft took off again with another 6-0 run. Following a Robert F. Kennedy point to end the run, Taft pulled away by outscoring the Lady Thunderbirds 7-3 to lead 19-7.
Robert F. Kennedy strung together back-to-back points before Taft outscored the Lady Thunderbirds 6-3 to close out the set and match.
