A Bakersfield man was killed early Friday morning in a head-on collision on Highway 58.
Another man, also from Bakersfield, suffered major injuries in the accident.
The California Highway Patrol said the victim, whose names has not been released by the Kern County Coroner, was eastbound on Highway 58 near Mayer Avenue (between I-5 and Highway 43) just after 5 a.m. when for unknown reasons his Toyota Corolla drifted to the right and on to the shoulder. The driver then turned to the left and veered across the eastbound traffic lane and into the westbound lanes where it collided with A Honda Accord.
The Acord, driven by Elias Torres, 34, of Bakersfield, ended up on its side.
Torres was taken to Kern Medical center with major injuries.
The driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified only as a 23-year-old Bakersfield man.
