Kern County Sheriff's Sr. Deputy Michael Worf said deputies from the Taft substation were called to a report of a suicidal subject at a home on Highway 33 at Elm Street at about 12:30 a.m..
When they tried to contact the man, whose identity was not immediately available, he "fired his weapons numerous times," Worf said.
Deputies retreated and a SWAT callout was initiated.
A standoff ensued, a gunshots were heard periodically through the rest of the morning.
The gunfire woke many residents up went "off and all night long,"
    said resident Peter Hartman.
Residents described the period gunfire as large-calibre fire.
"I was scared for people in their houses," Hartman said.
Details on the actual shooting have not yet been released.
But at about 6 a.m. Worf said the suspect was shot.
Resident reported hearing burst of semiautomatic or automatic weapons being fired.
"At some point there was an officer-involved shooting," Worf said. "No officers were injured. The suspect was taken to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries."
The swat callout included two armored vehicles, tactical teams, a crisis negotiator and a bomb squad.
Worf said he had no information on explosives being involved and said the bomb squad may have just been a normal part of the SWAT response.
Highway 33 was closed for several hours between Midway Road and McKittrick, but by 8 a.m. most of the roadway was reponed and closed only from Cloud Avenue to a point west of Elm.
