No one home when fire breaks out

Fire damaged an apartment in Taft Friday morning.

The fire was reported just before 9 a.m. at 211 West Ash, a fourplex of two story apartments.
The apartment was occupied by a man and his son, neighbors said, but no one was home when the fire was reported.
Kern County Fire Capt. Josh Naus said the fire had apparently been smoldering for some time before neighbor spotted smoke coming from a window.

Naus said the cause is under investigation.

The fire caused major damage to the first floor apartment interior and its furnishings as well as smoke damage throughout but no structural damage.
The vacant adjacent apartments were not damaged.
