  • Taft overcomes slow start to defeat South Rebels

  • The Taft varsity girls basketball team shook off a rough beginning to win 49-40 over the South Rebels in Bakersfield Tuesday night.
    South had most of the momentum in the first quarter by scoring 11 straight points over the first six minutes of the game. Taft finally got on the scoreboard in the last minute of the quarter with a jumper and free throw to trail by eight.
    Taft started making their comeback in the second quarter by outscoring the Lady Rebels 11-5. While they chipped away at the lead, South still had the advantage at 16-14. The Lady Wildcats kept chipping away at the advantage before overtaking the Lady Rebels at 19-18 with 1:22 to go. Even with a South three-pointer, Taft was able to hang to the lead going into the half.
    South regained the lead with a three-pointer 16 seconds into the third quarter. Taft and South traded baskets before the Lady Wildcats strung together three straight points. The teams resumed their trading of baskets until the Lady Rebels sank a free throw and three-pointer to regain a one point lead.
    Taft fought back to go up by three but South scored the final four points to go up by one heading into the fourth quarter.
    The Lady Rebels extended their lead to three at the 7:44 mark of the fourth quarter. However, South was held to three points the rest of the way. In the meantime, Taft answered with 15 to win the game.
