Two deputies fired on suspect in Derby Acres on Nov. 10
The two Kern County Sheriff's deputies were justified and within policy when they shot at a shooting suspect in Derby Acres on Nov. 10.
A Sheriff's shooting review board found that Sr. Deputy Derrick Penney and Deputy Logan August were within policy when they fired on Steven Cordova.
Penney and August were on the scene of an hours-long standoff involving Cordova that started about midnight and ended six hours later when Cordova was shot in the hand after he left the house he had been firing numerous shots from, according to reports at the time.
Cordova, 40, suffered a minor injury and was arrested and charged with assault with a firearm on a peace officer, threatening with the intent to terrorize, exhibiting a firearm to resist arrest and reckless discharge of a firearm.
Cordova has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is being held on $185,000 bail and is due back in court on Jan. 29 for a pretrial hearing and a preliminary hearing on January 30.
