Longhorns win all four games

It may not seem like baseball weather but the Taft Longhorns baseball team was on fire this past weekend when they won the Toys for Tots Tournament in Southwest Bakersfield.

“It was pretty cool,” said Taft coach Les Clark. “All the boys played well.”

Taft started out successful run Saturday when they defeated the Bakersfield Vipers 7-3. Logun Clark was the winning pitcher in the game with McDonnell getting the save.

Jason McDonnell hit a towering three run home run.

The Longhorns were on cruise control in their second game when they shutout Arvin 14-0. JD Hall was the winning pitcher in the game allowing a run over six innings.

Taft picked up where they left off Sunday by defeating the Bakersfield Vipers again 11-4. Like the first matchup, Clark got the victory pitching  4 1/3 with Hall getting the save. The Longhorns wrapped up their tournament run when they edged out the NW Bakersfield All-Stars 3-2 in eight innings.

Reese Hammons hit a walk off double to score Tyler Terrell from second base in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game. Kaleb Dickey was the winning pitcher for Taft allowing no runs in three innings while striking out seven. Chad Berry also made a diving catch in the game.

“Jackson Berry, Chad Berry and JD Hall played excellent defensively along with Corbin Yaws,” said Clark.
