Training will begin January 21
The West Side Wreck-Hers is a recreational roller derby league designed to teach women how to roller skate and the fundamentals of roller derby.
Our mission is to empower women through athleticism, sisterhood, and community involvement. Roller derby is an entirely different world. You can be yourself and be accepted.
We are school teachers, homemakers, correctional officers, secretaries, bartenders, tattoo artists.
We come from all walks of life. We are all shapes, sizes, and ages. But we share one common goal: the sport of ROLLER DERBY!
There are several requirements:
•You must be female and at least 18 years of age.
•Obtain proper protective gear and skates.
•You do not need to know how to skate! We will teach you.
•Pay registration fee of $30. Most leagues charge dues of about $40-$50 per month.
We will NOT be charging monthly dues, only a registration fee. This will cover necessary training expenses and t shirt costs.
•Obtain USA Roller Sports insurance, which is a secondary insurance required for the rink.
Practices will be held twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm.
Practices will include endurance, skills and drills, and strategy. Fresh Meat training will begin January 21st and skills assessments will be held April 12th.
Anyone interested in beginning the Fresh Meat program after January 21st must wait until the next quarter in May.
We are a league ran by the skaters for the skaters.
West Side Wreck-Hers was founded by several roller derby players from Kern County who have many years of experience skating and playing roller derby.
It is sponsored by the West Side Recreation and Park District, who provides an outdoor facility for the ladies to use for training purposes.
The Wreck-Hers are also sponsored by Black Gold Coffee and Deli.
Once women are trained to skate and learn how to play derby, they will be scrimmaging to gain roller derby experience. Look forward to seeing some bouts played in Taft in the 2014 year.
If you are interested in joining the West Side Wreck-Hers, you may contact Terra Bullard, Membership Director, at firstname.lastname@example.org or on facebook at facebook.com/dasbooty187.
You may also pick up an informational packet at the West Side Recreation and Park District or Black Gold Coffee Shop.
We held an orientation in December which provided a great turn out of women interested in learning to skate and play derby.
We will be holding a second orientation for those who missed it on Tuesday, January 7 at 7 pm at the West Side Recreation and Park District.
