  • Houston Thomas “Tom” Ballard entered life in Braggs, Oklahoma on August 10, 1921 to Tom and Mable Ballard. He entered eternal life while holding hands with his beloved Helen on December 19, 2013 in Bakersfield, California. Graveside services will be held at West Side District Cemetery in Taft on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Viewing will be at Erickson & Brown Funeral Home on Thursday, December 26, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. He met and married Helen Fitzer in 1946 in Tacoma, Washington while stationed in the Army at Fort Lewis. Tom and Helen moved to Taft in 1949. In 1952 they relocated to Dustin Acres where they resided for the next 62 years while Tom worked in the production department for Mobil Oil 35 years. Tom enjoyed farm-life: raising livestock, growing okra, jojoba trees and nut trees. For many years Tom and Helen enjoyed bowling and going to state bowling tournaments, RV-ing and playing dominos and cards with special friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings and one grandson. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen; children, RB Moon of Reno, NV, Pat Ballard of Gore, OK, Tom Ballard (Sue) of Gore, OK, Sharon McElmurry (Keith), Bill Ballard (Dianna), Stan Ballard of Coos Bay, OR, Coleen Hoskins (Doug) of Fresno, David Ballard (Terry) of Bakersfield; 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild; cousins, nieces and nephews. “Bacca” and “Poppa” as his grandchildren called him, was special to each one and they will always have fond memories of him in their hearts.
