Police say suspect led officers on short pursuit before his arrest
A Taft man was arrested on attempted murder charges after Taft Police said he choked a pregnant woman to the point of unconsciousness Wednesday afternoon.
Gary Scott Fuller, 37, was arrested after a brief vehicle pursuit through downtown Taft.
Chief of Police Ed Whiting said officers were called to a report of a woman being chased by a man in the 300 block of South Sixth Street.
As they arrived, officers were told the woman was hiding in the backyard of nearby condominiums, Whiting said, and the suspect was fleeing in a vehicle.
Officers found the victim, identified as Randell Ewing, 22, who had been "choked out" to the point of unconsciousness, Whiting said.
The suspect led them on what Whiting described as a brief vehicle pursuit through the downtown before stopping on the 600 block of Lucard Street where he was arrested.
Ewing was taken to a Bakersfield hospital for treatment.
Fuller was booked into Taft jail and charged with attempted murder, cruelty to child, possession of a controlled substance, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia and evading arrest in a vehicle.
