It is that time of the year when there is either deep disappointment or happiness. The Taft varsity girls basketball team experienced the former Tuesday night after the Cesar Chavez Titans held on to a 49-46 victory in Taft.
The game was close early before the Lady Titans reeled off eight straight points as part of a 12-2 run to lead 16-6. Halle Neher finally broke the run but Cesar Chavez countered with a three-pointer right before the buzzer.
After the teams traded baskets to begin the second quarter, Taft roared to life by scoring 15 points while holding the Lady Titans to a free throw. The difference gave the Lady Wildcats a 25-22 lead at the break.
The game remained close early in the third quarter before Taft attempted to pull away with a 7-0 run to lead 36-30. However, Cesar Chavez outscored the Lady Wildcats 6-2 the rest of the quarter to trail by two.
Neither team was able to get any points in nearly three minutes of the fourth quarter. Taft finally broke through with a three-pointer but Cesar Chavez tied the score with a three-pointer. Taft pulled ahead but the Lady Titans went on a 6-0 run to lead by four. Taft answered with two free throws and a three-pointer to regain the lead but Cesar Chavez answered with a layup to win.
