Suspect also charged with stealing battery, possession of meth

 Kern County Sheriff's deputies from the Taft substation arrested a man on theft charges after he was caught stealing lemons in a rural area on the Maricopa flats last week.

Deputies were dispatched on Jan. 7 at 8:30 p.m. to a to a lemon orchard owned by Paramount Citrus Company, located at Hwy. 166 and Old River Rd.

Sgt. Martin Downs said deputies found 55-year-old Jose Pena of Taft was in the process of stealing lemons and loading them into his vehicle.

Down said deputies found inside of Pena’s vehicle approximately 250 pounds of stolen lemons from the orchard.

Also inside the vehicle was an industrial type battery which had been stolen from a wind machine located in the same lemon orchard.

Pena was arrested and found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

Pena was booked at the Taft City Jail for grand theft, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance.
