  • YREKA – A prank call had officers responding to a report of vandalism Wednesday at the Comfort Inn in Yreka. The victims, two elderly travelers, received a call to their room from someone claiming to be police dispatch, according to Police Chief Brian Bowles. Bowles said the women were advised to take urgent action due to a propane leak in the building.
    According to police:
The women were told to put a wet rag in front of their door.
They were further instructed to break the window of their second-story room to throw all electronics out. The women complied and threw the television, coffee pot, cellphones and computers out of the window.
“I want to put the word out to everyone before they do anything, hang up and dial 911 to confirm,” Bowles said.
In recent weeks, issues regarding phone calls to hotel rooms wanting credit card information have also occurred, Bowles said. He urged people not to release any credit card information over the phone.
“Walk down to the front desk,” he said.
