Police still trying to sort out events that started with report of assault on Kern Street and ended with crash in Ford City

Taft Police are still trying to sort out the events from early Sunday morning when a report of an assault in progress on the 700 block of Kern Street led to a vehicle pursuit and crash.

One person, the man accused of leading officers on the chase through Taft and into Ford City before crashing in the front yard of a home on Madison Street is in the kern County jail facing several felony counts.

Abelardo Guitron, 20, is accused of driving the suspect vehicle in the pursuit.

He is being held in Kern County Jail and charged with felony evading in a vehicle, felony resisting arrest, resisting or obstructing officers and driving a vehicle while under age 21 with a blood alcohol in excess of .01.

Two other people in the car were detained and one could possibly facing resisting arrest charges, Taft Police. Lt. Pete Aranda said.

The pursuit started when officers were dispatched to a report of two victims of an assault on the 700 block of Kern/.

As they arrived, they were told three suspects left the scene in a vehicle.
Taft Police officer Erik Hallmark tried to effect a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver failed to yield and the pursuit was on.

Kern County Sheriff's deputies joined in the chase until it ended when the suspect vehicle crashed into a fence the the front yard on the 100 block of Madison.

The driver and one of the passengers attempted to flee and the driver then fought with officers before they were subdued and arrested, police said.

Meanwhile, one of the victims from the original assault report on Kern Street was transported to a Bakersfield hospital for treatment.

He was “incoherent and unresponsive,” Aranda said.
