  • Two men, apparently under the influence of drugs, spent hours inside a pickup that got stuck off an oilfield road north of Taft before they were found Tuesday.
The pickup was stolen, the California Highway Patrol said, and the two men were both arrested on drug and stolen property charges.
The incident began sometime later Monday night or early Tuesday morning, according to information from law enforcement sources.
The two men, for some reason, had apparently taken a dirt road west of Elk Hills road just north of Highway 119.
About 100 yards off the paved road, they apparently tried to climb a hill but slid back down.
They tried to climb another hill and got stuck.
There they stayed, until about 2:20 p.m. when the CHP received a report of a vehicle accident with two unresponsive men.
CHP officers, Kern County Sheriff's deputies, firefighters and an ambulance all responded to the incident.
The firetrucks and ambulance were unable to make it over two large bumps, and law enforcement officers reached the scene first.
The men were both unconscious, inside the truck which was still running with rear wheels spinning in the dirt.
Sheriff's deputies and firefighters were able to wake both men and get them out of the truck.
How long they had been there is unknown, but one of the men reportedly told the CHP “we watched the sun come up” even though the truck was facing northwest.
Both men were taken from the truck and checked out by firefighters and paramedics.
Officers said at least one of the men admitted to taking Xanax, a prescription medication used to treat anxiety and similar problems.
The driver, identified as Travis Lawrence Callagy, 28, was booked into the Kern County Sheriff's central receiving facility and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, grand theft auto, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, driving under the influence and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
His passenger, John Carl Fike, 45, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
