Bishop upsets Taft by 20 points

TAFT-Throughout the day, rain has been falling off and on in Taft. In some ways it fit the mood for the No.6 seeded Taft varsity girls basketball team after they fell to No.6 Bishop 58-38 in the first round of the CIF-CS Division IV playoffs.

The Lady Wildcats grabbed the first lead of the game before the Lady Broncos reeled off six straight points thanks to a pair of three pointers. Taft came back with a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 11-6. However, the momentum tilted to the Lady Broncos side with Bishop scoring the final four points of the quarter to get within one.

Bishop continued that run into the second quarter by scoring the opening six points. Taft battled back with five to get within one. The teams went back and forth when it came to scoring points. Finally the Lady Wildcats strung together five straight points to regain the advantage at 24-23.

However, the Lady Broncos outscored Taft 4-1 over the final minute of the first half to lead 27-25 at the half.

Bishop took off at the start of the third quarter when they reeled off eight straight points. Taft finally got their first basket of the half at the 3:44 mark. After a Bishop layup, Taft attempted to get back into the game with five unanswered points to get within five at 37-32. The charge didn't last as the Lady Broncos went on a 5-2 run to lead 42-34 at the half.

Taft scored the opening basket of the fourth quarter  but they would only score two more points the rest of the game. In the meantime, Bishop erupted for 16 to win by 20.
