Taft Planning Commission to hold workshop on goals for the future

Center Street has taken center stage recently in a variety of discussions, which is only appropriate, since it's still the center of Taft's downtown.

Wednesday night it will again be in the spotlight when the Taft Planning Commission holds a special workshop to develop a “needs assessment” for the street.

Downtown businesses, led by Vicky Gregory of Personal Style, have started a revival of the area with a monthly Cruise Night that is drawing people back to the downtown

Just two weeks ago the Planning Commission held a lengthy meeting to discuss a proposal to turn at least two blocks into a one-way street for eastbound traffic only.

That idea has, for all intents and purposes, been abandoned.

Wednesday's workshop starts at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center Council Chambers.

The Planning Commission will cover a vary of topics, including:

• Definition of the Center Street area.

•Identification of goals and objectives for the Center Street area.

•A discussion of desired, permitted uses for Center Street.

•Discuss desired permitted uses unique to Center Street.

•Establish goals for the short, medium and long term.

•Take public comments, and then provide direction to City staff.
