Patricia Olea will serve as district historian and Taylor Fivecoat will be the district reporter for Future Homemakers of America Region 8
Two Taft Union High School freshmen were elected to serve as the Region 8 officers of the Future Homemakers of America at an FHA convention at Kern Valley High School on March 17.
Patricia Olea will serve as district historian and Taylor Fivecoat will be the district reporter during the 2014-15 school year. They will be officially inducted at the state FHA meeting in Riverside on April 12.
Their job duties include planning for and attending state conventions, leadership meetings and leadership trainings. The FHA has 10 districts in California.
Cheryl McGathey, the new foods teacher, revived the FHA program again after being dormant for many years. The club has 25 members and she plans to increase those numbers.
The election of the local officers follows on the heels of a commercial foods competition win by Taft seniors Dana Felix and Brian Ortega in Region 8. They cooked a four-course meal that included pork loin, jasmine rice and cabbage soup puree. They qualified for the state competition April 12 over spring break, but will be unable to attend.
“We are doing well for our first year,” McGathey said.
