Varsity wraps up league season with 12-2 record
The Taft High’s boys’ tennis teams had a busy and successful week to conclude the South Sequoia League season. The JV team beat Shafter, 9-0, on Tuesday and Wasco, 7-2, on Thursday to go undefeated in league, 8-0, and win their third straight SSL title. The team finished 15-1 overall.
The varsity team beat Shafter, 9-0, on Tuesday, Arvin, 9-0, on Wednesday in a game postponed by rain, and Wasco, 8-1, on Thursday to finish 12-2 in the SSL for second place behind undefeated Bakersfield Christian. The varsity team is 20-4 overall.
Taft will host the SSL individual singles and doubles championships the week after spring break. Each of the league’s eight teams will bring their top six players to participate in the finals, which begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24.
Winners will return on Friday for matches at 3 p.m. to decide the league individual champions and to see who qualifies for the Area (Kern County) individuals at Garces on May 9 and 10. Winners there advance to the sweet 16 Valley individual playoffs.
Taft will also participate in the Valley team playoffs and should be seeded No. 1 in Division IV, according to coach Jim Carnal. He expects Chowchilla to be seeded No. 2 when the draw is released April 28. Chowchilla beat the Wildcats in the 2012 Valley semifinals. The team playoffs will begin May 1.
