Boys win by 82 while girls win by 16
It was the final time this month that the Taft boys and girls swim teams would be competing in a meaningful meet. The Wildcats went with a bang Thursday afternoon when they defeated the Shafter Generals in a league meet.
“We’re very proud of the boys and girls swim teams,” said Taft coach John Usrey. “They defeated Shafter in a noble effort. At least half the team cut time as well.”
The Taft boys team handily defeated the Generals by a score of 120-38 and remained undefeated in league action.
Individually Sam Barnes, Joseph Michalski, Wyatt Huckins and Jacob Winfrey each led the way with four wins with half of those victories coming in relay races.
Michalski won his individual events in the 200 freestyle and the 100 yard backstroke with times of 2:11.91 and 1:07.44 respectively.
Meanwhile, Barnes won the 500 freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke in times of 5:52.79 and 1:12.94.
Winfrey won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:29.59 while winning the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:00.49.
Wyatt Huckins won the 50 freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle with respective times of 25.52 and 58.90.
In the relay races, Michalski, Barnes, Winfrey and Huckins teamed up to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.93.
Winfrey, Michalski and Barnes also teamed up with Austin Self to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:56.46.
Self also joined forces with Dustin Romandia, Richie Lozano and Huckins to win the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:46.33.
Self led the way for second place by finishing second in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 2:35.87 and 1:00.85.
As a team, the Lady Wildcats defeated Shafter 95-79.
Individually, Taft only won four swimming races with Hayley Brummett taking first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:50.65. Ruby Stith won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:33.70 while Brenda Arrellano won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:33.76.
Arrellano also teamed up with Patricia Michalski, Alysa Arndt and Taylan Erro to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 5:16.00.
The other victory for Taft was Brooke Reilly’s win in the diving competition. Reilly won with a mark of 125.80.
Taft had a string of second place results starting with Kayla Kaszycki’s second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 3:02.15.
Michalski was second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 3:15.98 while V. May was second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:07.91.
Brummett was second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:30.79. Erro was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:36.95.
In the relay events, Reilly, Stith, Victoria May and Tally Chavez teamed up to finish second in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay with times of 2:30.62 and 2:04.03.
Taft doesn’t return to competitive action until Thursday, May 1 when they host Wasco. A week later, the Wildcats will host the all South Sequoia League meet.
