Fire breaks out on Bitter Creek NWR. Air tankers, engines and helicopters sent to fire
A brush fire broke out in the mountains south of Maricopa Wednesday morning.
Kern County and federal firefighters from Los Padres National Forest are on scene and air tankers and helicopters have also been dispatched.
The fire is burning in the area of the Bitter Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Hudson Ranch Road and Cerro Noreste Road.
The fire was spreading at a moderate rate when the first firefighters arrived.
About the same time, a smaller brush fire burned about one-quarter acre along Highway 119 at the passing lanes south of Tupman Road but was quickly contained.
