Garage on Eastern, vacant house on Maple catch fire

Two structure fires broke out in the Taft area within minutes of each other early Wednesday.

One fire heavily damaged a house under construction in Valley Acres and the second destroyed a detached garage in South Taft.

The cause of both fires are under investigation.

The first fire broke out in the 27500 block of Maple Street in Valley Acres.
A single family home that was vacant and under construction was engulfed in flames when Kern County firefighters arrived a few minutes after the 3:51 a.m. call.

Then, at 4:09 a.m. calls began coming in of a structure fire on the 400 block of Eastern Avenue with two people possibly inside.
That fire took down a garage but there were no injuries.
There were unconfirmed reports that squatters may have been staying there.

Fighting that fire was made difficult by downed power lines laying across a chain link fence that made access to the fire a problem, KCFD spokesman Sean Collins said.

No damages estimates from either fire was immediately available.

Engines from Taft, Maricopa, Fellows, McKittrick and the ladder truck from Taft were needed to handle both incidents.
Some equipment was diverted from the Valley Acres fire to respond to the fire on Eastern.
