  • Triston Ginn, Austin Pendergrass and Victoria May were the big winners at the Taft Union High School Honors Night this past Monday. To the applause of an auditorium full of their peers, parents and friends, the trio walked off stage with more than $13,000 in college scholarships. Each received $8,000 from the Confidence Foundation, originally Whittier Oil.
    Ginn received a total of $14,675 including $3,000 from Midway Sunset, and $1,000 each from San Joaquin Refining and Oildorado. Pendergrass received a total of $14,450 including $3,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 each from the Class of 1950 and San Joaquin Refining. May received a total of $13,300 including $1,250 from Midway Sunset, and $1,000 each from San Joaquin and Chevron Valley Credit Union.
    Altogether, 75 students received 294 scholarships from 63 donors totaling $209,465. The Taft College Merit Scholarship was the biggest donor, chipping in $39,600.
    Other big winners were:
    Alan Reynoso with $8,250, including $2,500 from the Bob Barrett Class of 1958, $2,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship.
    Roxanna Barboza with $7,850, including $3,000 from Midway Sunset, $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship, and $1,000 from the Truman and Beatrice Weigand Memorial Tennis Scholarship.
    Cristina Diaz with $7,400, including $2,000 from the Class of 1949, $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship and $1,000 from Omni Family Health.
    Clayton Wikoff with $7,100, including $3,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 from the Class of 1950.
    Katie Burrows with $5,650, including $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship.
    Jacob Lopez with $5,600, including $3,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 from San Joaquin Refining.
    Kayla Kaszycki with $5,050, including $1,500 from Exxon Mobil Pipeline, $1,250 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 from the Shaye Fields Scholarship.
    Jacob Day with $4,700, including $2,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 from the MTC Scholarship.
    Brenda Arellano with 4,600, including $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship.
    Kyle Jameson with $4,575, including $2,000 from Midway Sunset.
    Lizette Mendoza with $4,550, including $2,000 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 from the Martha Henderson Soroptimist Scholarship.
    Catherine Sanchez with $4,500, including $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship and $1,000 from the Class of 1950.
    Haylee Tracy with $4,000, including $1,250 from Midway Sunset and $1,000 from the Temblor Ranch.

    Cameron Bunch with $3,250, including $1,000 each from the Ivor and Lea Cummings Tennis Scholarship and the MTC Scholarship.
    Dylan Botts with $3,200, including $2,500 from the Bob Barrett Class of 1958.
    Christine Adema with $3,100, including $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship.
    Cheyanne McAfee with $3,100, including $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship and $1,000 from the Shaye Fields Scholarship.
    Bradley Odom with $3,100, including $1,000 from the MTC Scholarship.
    Jesekah Rogers with $3,100, including $1,500 from the Chevron AVID Scholarship.
