  • Taft freshmen track teams win league championship

  • Boys win with 194.5 points while girls win with 149

  • A couple of the Taft High boys and girls track and field teams closed out the regular season with a bang Wednesday afternoon when the freshmen boys and girls teams won their division at the South Sequoia League championship in Delano.
    “I can’t be more proud of our athletes,” said Taft coach Eric Newton. “We took home a lot of medals. The meet was indicative of what our kids deserved. They worked hard all year and league champs should be the title that they take home with them.”
    Freshmen boys
    As a team, the Wildcats won with 194.5 points. Cesar Chavez was second with 143.
    In the individual races, Josh Sailor edged out Cesar Chavez’s Vincent Jacobo to win the 100 meters with a time of 12.01 to Jacobo’s 12.06. Sailor also finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.46.
    Cody McCaleb won the 400 meters with a time of 54.67 and was second in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:45.89.
    Alejandro Quinonez was second in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:15.15 while Camden Scalera was one spot in third with a time of 11:40.89.
    Zack Kolb had a pair of second place results. Kolb was second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.10. Kolb was also second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.55.
    Taft won both relay events with Chris Kast, Cody McCaleb, Josh Sailor and Gable teaming up to finish first in the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.00. Meanwhile, Donovan Watrous, Henry Landreth, McCaleb and Kast joined forces to win the 4x400 in a time of 3:41.42.
    In the field events, Kolb won the high jump with a mark of 5-02 and the triple jump with a mark of 37-11.50. Kast was second in the long jump with a mark of 18-05 while Gable was one spot behind with a mark of 18-02.25.
    Freshmen girls
    As a team, the Lady Wildcats were first with 149 points. Shafter was second with 142.
    Sarah Kelley won a pair of individual races by winning the 100 and 200 meters with times of 14.45 and 29.59.
    Mikayla Bratcher was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:58.36 while Yulisa Martinez was one spot back with a time of 3:10.71. Martinez was also third in the 1600 meters with a time of 6:29.93.
    Kelsey Rushing came in first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 20.00.
    Taft also won two relay races starting with Rushing, Kelley, Talavera and Bratcher teaming up to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 57.15. Jessica McDonald joined forces with Arely Varela, Martinez and Alejandra Cota to win the 4x400 in a time of 4:54.90.
    Page 2 of 2 - In the field events, Talavera won the pole vault with a mark of 8-00. Bratcher was second with a mark of 25-01 while Gena Putnam was second in the discus with a mark of 73-08. Putnam was also third in the shot put with a mark of 22-10.
    Varsity boys and girls
    Both teams finished seventh with the boys getting 23.5 points while the girls got seven points.
    “Our varsity athletes performed at their best as well,” said Newton. “This was an entire team effort from the coaching staff all the way down to our fresh end runners.”
    Cesar Guerrero had the second highest finish among the boys by coming in fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 18.54. Arturro Delgadillo was fifth with a time of of 18.74.
    Roy Allen also had a fourth place finish with his coming in the discus with a mark of 138-06. Allen had a sixth place finish in the shot put with a mark of 41-08.  CJ Lewis was third in the triple jump with a mark of 39-10.50.
    Marta Robles had the highest finish among the girls by coming in ninth in the 3200 meters where she had a time of 14:54.93. Abby Xancale was eleventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:53.19. Jacqueline Summers was seventh in the shot put with a mark of 28-01. Summers was also seventh in the discus with a mark of 78-06. Karina Amaya was sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 29-11.
    Several Wildcat athletes are not quite done with their season. The following are advancing:
    Gable in Pole vault, McCaleb in the 400 meters, Allen in the shot put and the discus, Talavera in the  girls pole vault and Lewis in the triple jump. Bullard (in the mile) and Kolb (in the 300 meter hurdles) are alternates.
