Lady Wildcats defeat Cesar Chavez by 21 runs

Some teams might be happy that a season is almost over. The Taft freshmen softball team is not one of them after blowing past Cesar Chavez 25-4 at home Tuesday afternoon to keep their perfect record in tact.

“We did really well adjusting to their pitching,” said Taft coach Michelle Gerry. “Once we were able to start hitting, the girls were very aggressive and heads up on the bases.”

With the victory, Taft improves to 17-0 overall and 7-0 in the South Sequoia League heading into their final game of the season.

Hailee Lopez led the offense for Taft by going 5-for-5 with three runs scored, four singles, a double and three runs batted in. Delila Benskin followed by going 4-for-4 with four runs scored, three singles, a triple and four runs batted in.

Kaitlyn Brown and Sierra Phillips each were 3-for-4. Brown also scored three times, had two singles, a triple and three runs batted in. Meanwhile, Phillips scored two times with two singles a double and three runs batted in.

Madison Borrecco was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, a home run, a single and two runs batted in. Bailey Powers was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two home runs and three runs batted in.

Roslyn Maino improved her record as a pitcher to 14-0 overall and 7-0 in league by giving up six walks and six hits while striking out seven batters.

“Christina Warner was able to steal second base twice on each of her walks, really helping us get into scoring position each time she came up to bat,” said Gerry.

Taft wraps up their season Friday when they host Shafter. The game begins at 4 p.m.
