Taft girls finish third
It was the final meet of the regular season but the Taft swim had something to cheer about after the Wildcat boys team won the South Sequoia League championship in Taft Thursday afternoon.
“As a coach I could not be more proud of them,” said Taft coach “On top of that, nearly all boys shattered their personal records. Wasco gave us some fierce competition but we prevailed.”
As a team, the Wildcats won with a total of 352 points. Wasco was second with 318.
Individually, Jacob Winfrey led the way by winning two races. Winfrey got his first victory in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:20.66. Wasco’s Kenneth Rodriguez was second with a time of 2:26.66.
Winfrey’s second victory came in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.22. Sam Barnes joined the winners list by finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:54.06. Barnes also was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.31.
Connor Barton had the other win for the Wildcats after finishing first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.99. The next closest competitor to Barton had a time of 1:14.72.
Wyatt Huckins had a second and third place finish in the meet. Huckins was second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.55 before finishing third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.95.
Joseph Michalski was second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.75. Jordan Lopez was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:14.15. Austin Self was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.15.
The victories in the individual races were not the only ones for Taft. Michalski, Barnes, Winfrey and Huckins teamed up to win the 200-yard IM medley relay in a time of 1:51.94. The next closest team was Wasco with a time of 1:54.60.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Barton, Winfrey, Michalski and Huckins joined forces to finish second with a time of 1:37.90. Self, Charles Lehman, Barton and Barnes teamed up to finish second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:51.62.
As a team, the Lady Wildcats were third with 226 points. Bakersfield Christian was first with 433 points.
Ruby Stith had the best finish for the Lady Wildcats by coming in second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:26.66.
Victoria May had a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle where she had a time of 1:05.98. Brooke Reilly was one spot behind with a time of 1:11.40. Alysa Arnett was third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time 1:30.97.
Tally Chavez was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 30.18 while Patty Michalski was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:29.06.
Reilly, Stith, May and Chavez teamed up to finish third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:20.64.
The Wildcats will continue their season with the Division II championship.
