  • An argument over salary last week escalated into an assault with a shovel and ended up with the suspect facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and grand theft.
The suspect, identified by the Kern County Sheriff's office as Vicente Martinez, 46, is accused of striking his employer with a shove several times, then stealing a shovel and grass trimmer.
Sgt. Marc Haiungs said it started as an argument over pay.
Deputies were sent to a report of a fight in progress at 12:45 p.m. in the area of South Tenth and Wood streets.
Deputies found the victim, a 49-year-old Taft resident suffering head and hand injuries. He told deputies Martinez had attacked him with a shovel and stole the other items and left, saying he would give them to the victim when he got paid.
Haiungs said deputies determined Martinez worked for the victim and demanded his pay instead of waiting until the end of the day.
After the attack, Martinez grabbed the shovel and weed eater and walked.
Deputies searched the area and located Martinez in the 100 block of Lierly.
He was arrested and during the search deputies found methamphetamine is his hat.
Sheriff's jail records show Martinez is being held on three felony counts: assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft from a person and possession of a controlled substance.
He is also being held on a warrant for driving without a license and failing to pay a fine, and on a no-bail immigration hold.
