  • Defendant pleads no contest to felony assault, rape charge dismissed

  • A Taft man arrested for rape in March pleaded no contest to felony assault on a person with force likely to cause great bodily injury Tuesday in Kern County Superior Court and the rape charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
    Kenneth Sutton Burns, 40 was charged in connection with a rape that occurred in the Ford City area on Oct. 24, 2013, Kern CountySheriff's officers said.
    No details of the case were released.
    A warrant was issued for Burns' arrest in early February after a 3-month investigation.
    Burns was arrested on March 20 by Taft Police after he appeared in Taft's Most Wanted.
    Police were alerted by a passer-by who recognized Burns from TMW while walking on the 800 block of Center street.
    Officers responded and took him into custody without incident.
    Burns is scheduled to be sentenced on June 10.
    He is being held in jail on $25,000 bail.
