Suspect tried to flee down alley as deputies arrive during break-in, sergeant says
A Taft teenager was arrested by Kern County Sheriff's deputies after a brief late night foot chase down an alley in Taft Heights last week.
Deputies went to the 400 block of B Street about 11:30 p.m. on May 22 to a report of trespassing at a residence there, Sgt. Marc Haiungs said.
The deputies heard movement in the back yard as they arrived and then saw they a person matching the description of the suspect leave the yard and attempt to run down the alley.
The suspect, identified as Zackary Owens, 18, was caught after a brief foot chase, Haiungs said,
deputies searched Owens' backpack and found a hypodermic syringe and other items they identified as possible stolen property.
Further investigation led the deputies to believe Owens was attempting to break into the house when deputies arrived, Haiungs said.
Owens was booked into the Taft City jail and charged with attempted residential burglary, resisting arrest and unlawful possession syringe.
