  • WSRPD offers summer activties

  • That time of the year has arrived when school is out and kids are looking for something to do. The West Side Recreation and Park District has a range of options over the next several months.
    One of the options is Summer Fun in the Aera Gymnasium. Summer Fun, which is free, starts Monday and will last until July 17. It goes from Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., each day. Kids will have the opportunity to play games, do crafts sports and other activities.
    On Tuesday, the West Kern Oil Museum is offering Discovery Day focused on Yokut lone music and crafts. Space is limited and pre registration is required. The cost is free with the program going from 10 a.m.-noon. Registration is Monday, in the District office.
    This coming Friday, the Rec will offer Art is Fun for kids four years and older. The activity will offer painting, drawing, coloring and more from 11 a.m.-noon. Younger kids will need to bring along an older helper. The cost is $3 per person and will be held at the Community Center Assembly room.
    The West Kern Oil Museum will offer a Discovery Day focusing on the history of living and working in the early oil fields on Tuesday, June 17. There will also be a treasure hunt.
    The Discovery Day is open to kids between the sixth and eighth grades and will last from 9 a.m.-noon at the West Kern Oil Museum. The activity is free but the registration deadline is Monday, June 16 in the District Office.
    A day later, the WSRPD will have an ice cream and movie event. The movie The Nut Job will be shown and ice cream sundaes will be made. The activity is open to kids between kindergarten  and eighth grade and will last from 2-3:30 p.m.
    The cost is $3 per person and will be held at the Community Center Assembly Room.
    The West Kern Oil Museum will hold a fun day with a blacksmith on Friday, June 20 at the West Kern Oil Museum. Kids will get the chance to make their own nail ring and discus the importance and significance of blacksmithing.
    The free activity is open to kids between the sixth and eighth grades. Space is limited with the activity running from 10 a.m.-noon. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, June 19 in the District office.
    Candy Bar Bingo will be the next activity that will be held on Monday, June 23 from 2-3 p.m in the Community Center Assembly Room. The activity is open to kids between the first and eighth grades and will be free.
    The West Kern Oil Museum will hold another event on Tuesday, June 24 with Let’s Fly a Kite. The free event will take place at the West Kern Oil Museum and will run from 10 a.m.-noon. Kids between the grades of fourth and eighth grade will get the chance to make their own kite and fly it.

    A couple of days later, the Rec will offer Delicious Desserts on Thursday, Jun 26. Kids between the ages of six to 12 years old will get to make treats like cobbler, cookies and ice cream and will get the recipes.
    The activity will run from 2:30-4:15 p.m., at the Community Center Auditorium and Kitchen. The cost is $6 per person while the deadline is Wednesday, June 25.
    Tie Dye T-shirts will be held on Tuesday, July 1 from 1-2:30 p.m., at the Community Center Activity Building.
    Kids between the grades of two to eight years old are to bring a new washed 100 percent cotton t-shirt and they will get to dye it red and blue. Kids are also encouraged to wear old clothes to work in. Space is limited.
    The cost is $5 per person while the deadline to signup is Monday, June 30.
    Beads and more beads will be held Tuesday, July 8 from 3-4:15 at the Community Center Assembly Room. Kids between the grades of kindergarten through sixth grade can make a variety of projects using beads. The cost is $3 per person.
    A barbecue lunch and movie will be held Friday, July 11 from 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Barbecued hot dogs, chips and drinks will be offered along with the movie Free Birds. The cost is $3 per person and is open to kids between kindergarten and eighth grade.
    The following Wednesday, July 16, the Rec will offer sidewalk chalk art for kids three and up from 9-10 a.m., at the Community Center Parking Lot. The activity is free.
    The Rec will hold a cookie workshop on Tuesday, July 22. The activity is open to kids four years and up and will be held in the Community Center Assembly Room. Younger kids will need to bring along an older helper. The activity will run from 2-3:15 p.m., and costs $3 per person.
