  • The Taft Chamber of Commerce collected almost $3,000 Friday from motorists during a four-hour fireworks fundraiser, so with the Fourth of July less than a month away, it's time to start planning for the big Rails to Trails Fireworks Show.
Thanks to a donation from Dave Noerr, this year's show is going to be bigger, better and louder than ever.
Noerr, who annually makes a large donation to help fund the fireworks donated enough money to purchase larger diameter shells to be fired during the show.
Noerr is paying for some 5-inch diameter shells that will be fired throughout the display and those will provide larger, louder bursts.
Traditionally the largest shells have been 4-inch diameter.
The fireworks show will be along Rails to Trails.
This is the second year for the downtown fireworks show and last year's show was a big hit, drawing hundreds of spectators who sat on the grass along the jogging and walking path.
The fireworks will start about 9 p.m., but there is going to be plenty to see and do and eat and drink before the show starts. To make it even more fun, the popular First Friday Cruise Night will be going on at the same time with a beer garden in Fifth Street Plaza.
Food and merchandise vendors, plus beer gardens and bounce houses for the kids will be setting up starting at 4 p.m.
Taft Chamber of Commerce Special events coordinator Shannon Jones said the chamber is still looking for a band to perform at the event.
Contact the chamber at 661-765-2165 if you're interested in performing.
