Vallejo High Assistant Principal Chuck Chauvin will take over new position on July 1

Taft Union High School has a new administrator to oversee its athletic programs.

The TUHS Board of Trustees voted 4-0 Monday night to hire Chuck Chauvin as its first dean of academics and athletics.

Chauvin, currently an assistant principal at Vallejo High School, will start his new job at Taft High on July 1.

In a controversial move, the district dismissed athletic director Marsha Eubank at a special board meeting on March 14, then approved the new job title for the dean of academics and athletics position at its next meeting on April 9.

The new job requires an administrative credential, which Eubank did not have.

Chauvin has been a coach in addition to his administrative duties at Vallejo High, his alma mater.

He has been a head and assistant coach in golf and baseball (both varsity and junior varsity), junior varsity football and an assistant coach in varsity football.

Chauvin was one of 26 applicants for the position, TUHS Superintendent Blanca Cavazos said.

Chauvin will not only oversee athletics as athletic directors do, but take on administrative duties, too, Cavazos said. That will include evaulating certificated staff in addition to evaluations of coaches.

Cavazos said Chauvin's experience in coaching – more than 20 years – plus his experience in administration made him the district's choice.

Chauvin, married and the father of two, including a son who will be entering Taft High as a freshman in the fall, said he and his wife were looking to relocate to a small community.

They currently live in Fairfield, Ca.
